I know, I know…this isn’t WTF at all. But, I’m posting this to pose a query: Nerd Con models, do they serve a purpose other than to frustrate the throng of males, many of whom are quite awkward socially and barely able look one of these lovely ladies in the eyes? Do they drive up sales that much? Or, is their sole purpose to be hit on by the developers and creators that hired them in the first place?
My money is on the latter.

Thank you all for your excellent responses! I learned more about cons, costumes and the super-awesome ladies that attend them than I thought possible. During Cons I’m usually a barely functioning human due to the almost deadly amount of booze I’ve imbibed so that I to can deal with those teeming convention halls and the wondrous sundries they contain. Therefore I’ve been unable to reason this query out on my own.

    It’s an attempt to socialize the male nerd. Start with something familiar (pikachu) and add the unfamiliar (a hot lady). Once the nerd becomes accustomed to seeing these women at conventions, the next step can be taken: a normal-looking woman in a pikachu costume. The male can attempt to communicate with these females in comfortable situations, such as their basement sanctuary. Perhaps, soon, the final step can be implemented: a normal-looking woman in no costume. By this time, the male nerd will be used to conversing with women and the “security blanket” of the costume can be removed.

    She (and other cuties) were at this year’s San Diego Comic Con.

    Mind you there were also 140,000 other geeks in attendance the there were a disproportionately high number of attractive girls in tight costumes.

    Joe, to answer your question: frankly most the girls like to dress up. My girlfriend has gone ComicCon (where the above picture was taken) every year for the last 5 years and she brings a different geeky costumes that she made to inspire nerdvana.

    They do it for the attention.

    Joe, I would have to disrespectfully disagree. There is definitely some WTF to this. If you ask me picture of the chick with the vines earlier was just a hot costume and not WTF worthy. Am I saying I can’t appreciate the hawtness of that photo? No. Did it make me think WTF? No. Let’s discuss…

    As a busty con babe myself, I can say that yes we are there to drive up sales.
    I once wore shibari (japanese bondage ropes) at our J-Rock/hentai booth, and MAN did we sell a shit load of merch! People flock to the hot girl booths, over the creepy old man selling D&D shirts.

    I dress up in some sort of costume for every Con I go to. I wish I got paid for it, that way i could recoup the cost of all that fabric! I do it because it’s fun and it gives me a chance to expose (no pun intended) some people to some of my favorite shows if they haven’t seen them. And like Lear said, the attention is nice too. ;-)

    Actually that’s not quite true I did have several chances with some super hot girls which I totally blew, completely my own fault. Still until it happens again I’m holding on to the hot girls can’t be geeky thing.

    IT’S TO SELL THEIR PRODUCT!

    Not everyone that goes to the convention is not going to have ultimate knowledge of every thing on sale.

    Booth Chicks are a type of advertisement. They’re there to attract other customers to their booth. Of course just putting a hot girl in latex is not going to make them remember what your product is, so just make them wear something related to the product they’re selling.

    It’s the same as the motor girls at a car show. What better way to sell a Ferrari when a chick is rubbing her ass on it in-front of you.

    I should mention that many journalists visit conventions, so if you’re able to get the attention of the journalist and take a photo of your booth girl, you just saved 100 thousand dollars on advertising.

    I used to dress up for LARP events at D&D cons when I was still writing for Wizards of the Coast, just because it was fun and it made players want to attend the cons. I don’t dress up at D&D cons anymore, but I’m frequently in costume at East Coast anime cons. It’s just fun to dress up and have fellow geeks recognize your costume! It’s also a great conversation starter.
