    Here are some points I’d like to hit:
    What are the underlying causes? Are they biological, or simply psychological perversions? What influence does the media have when they sexualize young girls and turn them into the product? Romeo and Juliet were 16. People used to get married then. Is it cultural? Many places it’s legal to marry 8 year olds. The closer to onset of periods a girl is, the less likely she is to have a miscarriage or a deformity in her child. Virginity is prized in all cultures, younger suggests more likely to be a virgin, is that part of it? What about the backlash shown here? Is it because people are fed up with all the things listed above? Is it because we, as a culture, feel protective of the young? Is it because we “know it’s wrong” only because we have been raised with these morals?

Is a picture of a beautiful 8-year old dressed in jeans and a long-sleeved shirt with big beautiful brown eyes smiling into the camera child porn just because it could solicit the same physical/chemical response? What about a 12-year old in a bathing suit? At 16, it’s legal for girls to pose topless with parental consent (ask Miley Cyrus). The hard part of this thing is that there are so many shades of gray. Where should the lines be drawn, and by whom?

    It is most definitely cultural.
    In our cultures (generalising to what appears to be the major user groups here, US, AUS, and GB), 18 is the age where one is no longer a minor. I’m sure that none of us are foolish enough to believe that people under 18 are not engaging in sexual acts, but the law is designed to protect the young from exploitation, and to stop people making a profit off underaged sexual acts.
    Yes, many cultures in the world have ages of consent much younger than our own. But have you noticed the correlation between age of consent, and prevalence of pornography?

    Again, the difference is intent/motive.
    Depending on the country, there are further stipulations in that law saying that the image must still be “modest”, eg, no showing of the nipple/aureole.
    The lines are drawn by society. If people stand up and say that something is unacceptable, then it becomes that.

    It depends on the taboo. For example, many BDSM acts are taboo, but their popularity lies within the needs of the people involved. For example, floggings. It is not necessarily the taboo nature of the act which makes it appealing, but the desire to be controlled, and the appeal of pain. However, public sex is also taboo, yet it’s popularity seems to stem more from the fact that it is taboo, the risk of being caught and potential consequences. The thrill factor.
    Now with pedophilia, like all sexual acts, there are different reasons which motivate the individuals. For some, it is power and control. For others, it is a mental deficiency. For others again, it is the fact that society deplores it which makes it most appealing.

    The fact that something is taboo does not necessarily make it more appealing to the public at large, however, it does lend itself to appeal to those already predispositioned toward that kink.

    Re: Pornography, I have not done enough research into the matter to form an opinion, but I thought it was just an interesting little tid bit of knowledge. It does seem to be very culturally based.

    Yes, I do. Normally, if one photo is found, it indicates that many others of a similar and escalating nature can be found.

    Think of it this way. You have a girlfriend/wife/partner. You take some pictures of her, tastefully dressed, but with a bit of cleavage. Over time, the pictures get more risque, maybe she sends you a picture of her in a towel. Then wearing nothing, but hiding behind her arm, then nothing at all, then acts of a sexual nature. Now, in this context, that really is quite ok. Your partner is an adult, who has not been forced or pressured into the situation. She had the choice to say no, she had the option of leaving.

    Now, change the situation to a pedophile and a child. Most abusers are someone the child knows, a family member, or a family friend. The children are often taught to believe that they initiated it, they wanted it, it’s their fault. The child was not in control of the situation, not able to stop it, not able to walk away. Being told that something which shames you is your fault, when you have not been the cause, is damaging.

    It is my belief that if a child is photographed in scenarios such as this, how can it possibly benefit them?

Perhaps she is benefitting by this—maybe she’s being paid, or maybe it’s to help launch her modeling career. If the girl in question here were 5 years old, there is definitely something wrong with it. 16, not so much.

    The general consensus seems to dictate this is alright.

    For what it’s worth, illegal child pornography requires the child depicted to be involved in a sexual act. Naked solo poses which don’t focus on genitalia are completely legal. Like it or not, there’s nothing even remotely illegal in this photo.

    It’s legal for a child to be nude in a photo as long as the content isn’t sexual and the photo isn’t displayed or stored with sexual material. Naked doesn’t equal sexual, you pervs.
