Cougar-Free High School of the Day: Students at Corner Canyon High School in Draper, Utah were hoping for some cougar action. They were denied.
School administrators allowed students to vote on the new high school’s mascot. Would they be the Cougars, Raptors, Falcons or Diamondbacks? When 23% of the student body voted for Cougars, parents complained.
“We have received numerous e-mail messages and phone calls from parents and patrons in Draper asking us to reconsider the inclusion of ‘Cougars’ as a mascot option,” wrote district superintendent David S. Doty. “Many [...] have commented on the negative double entendre of the word ‘cougar.’”
The school went with “Chargers” instead. There will be a lot less snickering in the halls of Corner Canyon, unfortunately.
